Welcome to Summer Season 2021!

We’ve got a lot in store in this post, as we try to navigate what Camp Talahi will look like in the midst of a turbulent and ever-changing pandemic season. The primary goal of this post is to communicate openly and transparently with our community. We’ve got a lot of plans that we are looking forward to, and are finally ready to share. We also have concerns, uncertainties, and worries that we are also sharing with you. While you won’t find any guarantees for what is in store this summer, we hope to provide you at least where we are currently, and what the roadmap ahead to the 2021 season looks like.

Responding to Feedback from our Survey

Over the past two months, we have sent out two slightly different surveys looking for feedback on how the Camp Talahi family was feeling and thinking about having camp this summer. The feedback illustrated several key points, which were incredibly valuable as we plan this Summer’s activities (Huge shoutout to everyone who participated!). The main findings from the survey, with some quick commentary of these results, follows.

1. People are excited about Camp, and concerned about not having camp
-We are so glad this is the case, thank you for your commitment to Camp Talahi in this weird and trying time!

2. People are concerned about COVID, and interested in the precautions Camp Talahi will be taking to comply with recommendations and limit the chance of COVID outbreak during the summer
      – We share your concerns! This is obviously the elephant in the room, and we are doing our best to make Camp both the most fun and the safest environment possible! Read COVID precautions section below for more details on how Talahi will be handling this issue

3. A large contingent of people would be unable to participate in day camps if they were offered at Camp Talahi.
     – This was an idea we had floated to the community as a possible way of remaining engaged in on-site activities, while limiting some of the trickier to navigate issues like sleeping and showering accommodations on site. However, we 100% understand difficulties with daily transportation, with our community largely spread out across the state of Michigan. With this feedback in mind, we will not be moving forward with the day-camp idea for Summer 2021.

The Plan as it stands
At the time of writing this post, we stand at an polarizing point in pandemic history. One one hand there is optimism as vaccines become more available to the general population (though relevantly, only the adult population). On the other, Michigan’s COVID numbers have been extremely high, and are the subject of national news headlines. In light of these circumstances, and given the communities feedback from the surveys mentioned above. Camp Talahi has opted to once again alter its Summer Season 2021 schedule, though in less dramatic fashion than for the 2020 season. As it stands, the currently scheduled camp activities are as follows.

COVID Precautions at Camp Talahi: Summer 2021
Understandably, the main concern we received on our survey was what precautions Camp Talahi would be taking to prevent the spread of COVID. Most importantly, Camp Talahi intends to comply with any and all State provisions and mandates with regards to group gatherings. In addition, you can find below some information on some specifics of the way Campis adapting to the conditions this summer.

– Mandatory Mask wearing
– 6ft. Social Distancing (including sleeping spaces)
– Reduced Contact Meal lines
– Increased Cleaning and Disinfecting of common area surfaces
– Vaccinated adult volunteers/staff

In addition to these prevention methods, it is also important to be aware of precautions that Camp Talahi is unable to make this summer, primarily due to budget constraints and external circumstances. For example plexiglass shields installed in either the lodge or the dorms, and due to lack of availability to the majority of our camper population, campers will not be required to have received a COVID vaccination prior to attending.

If you have other questions or concerns about the precautions being taken at Camp Talahi this summer, please do not hesitate to contact us via our Facebook or email (camptalahi@gmail.com

Giving During the Pandemic

This season of pandemic has been difficult for everyone across the country (and beyond!), and so it is too with Camp Talahi. While we have managed to persevere through a summer season which saw pandemic-induced decreased camper counts and cancelled rentals, both of which had severe impacts on our finances, we have been sustained largely based on the continued generosity of the Talahi community. It is in this light that we ask for your continued support in this season of Thanksgiving. Off-seasons are always tough for us at Talahi financially, and though we recognize that finances are tight for many of our community members as well, know that we appreciate whatever you can give to ensure Camp’s continued future!
